Communities in the hills of Southern California are used to seeing bears, but residents of Chatsworth were surprised when they spotted one hanging out in their neighborhood.

The tagged bear was spotted around 11 p.m. Monday and Los Angeles police were tracking the animal before it hid behind some buildings.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has also been notified and is closely monitoring the situation.

“We are aware of the bear in Chatsworth and are responding to human-wildlife conflicts with our staff. We understand the public’s curiosity and interest, but the crowds and media presence are slowing the animal’s movement,” said Tim Daly of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

No one was hurt.

Authorities hope the bear will return to the hills on its own.
