Beatrice Chebet breaks world record in the 10,000 meters during Pre Classic

Kenyan Beatrice Chebet broke the world record in the women’s 10,000 meters on Saturday at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon.

Chebet, 24, clocked 28 minutes, 54.15 seconds at Hayward Field in her first 10,000-meter race since March 2020.

She became the first woman to break 29 minutes at the event, beating Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey’s previous world record of 29:01.03 set in 2021.

Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay came second on Saturday in 29:05.92, the third fastest time in history.

At last year’s Pre Classic, Tsegay broke the world record for the 5000 meters in a race in which Chebet clocked the third fastest time in history.

Chebet has won silver and bronze medals at the 5000m world championships in the past two years and is likely to make her Olympic debut in Paris this summer.

The majority of the Pre Classic events will be live later Saturday on NBC, NBCSports.com, the NBC Sports app and Peacock from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM ET.
