Before noon, Phoenix broke the heat record on this date. This is what will happen this week

Phoenix broke the daily record before Sunday afternoon, extending a record heat wave in late September.

The temperature rose to 108 degrees shortly after 11 a.m., surpassing the old record of 107 degrees set in 2003, the National Weather Service in Phoenix reported.

Sunday’s record extends a week of record-breaking temperatures expected to last through the first week of October.

The temperature reached 117 degrees on Saturday, breaking the previous daily record of 108 degrees set in 1992.

The September 29 record is likely to increase as temperatures rise during the afternoon. The forecast calls for a high of 112. The average normal high for this date is 96 degrees, the weather service said on X.

An excessive heat warning remains in effect through Oct. 4, with the highest daily forecast being 109 on Monday, 111 on Tuesday, 109 on Wednesday and Thursday, and 110 on Friday, the weather service said.

Phoenix also broke a record overnight, when the low was 88 degrees, six degrees above the previous record-warm low of 82, the weather service said.
