Jersey striker Lorne Bickley has praised the character of the Island side after they won their fifth successive Muratti Vase.

Bickley’s goal in extra time saw Jersey beat Guernsey 3–2 to set their second longest winning streak in the competition.

Jersey thought they would win the match in normal time before Will Fazakerley’s injury-time equalizer forced another period.

Jersey’s run of eight consecutive victories between 1958 and 1965 is still their record. Guernsey last won the competition in 2017.

“We’ve got experienced guys in there, guys who work hard, guys who want to be here, guys who want to play for Jersey and that’s what we showed,” Bickley told BBC Radio Jersey.

“We could have easily put our heads down towards the end of the game, but we didn’t. We showed character, got the winning goal and now we can celebrate.”

It was a debut win for newly appointed boss Elliot Powell.

Jersey’s unbeaten run at the Muratti dates back to 2018, when the 2020 and 2021 fixtures were canceled due to the Covid pandemic.

“This was by far the best I’ve been involved in,” Bickley added of the win.

“One of the coaching staff said it is the first time since 1960 that Jersey has won the title in five consecutive years.

“That’s huge, we’re making history and giving credit to everyone, the boys, the coaching staff, the fans who came here today.”
