Despite admitting it was a “weak debate performance” from the president Joe BidenSen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) said Sunday that Biden is the “only” Democrat who can beat the former president Donald Trump in November.
Talk to host Jonathan Karel on ABC’s “This Week,” Coons said, “The stakes of this race couldn’t be higher. And the only Democrat to ever beat Donald Trump is Joe Biden.”
When Karl asked him if he thought anyone else could beat Trump in November, Coons said no.
“I think he’s the only Democrat who can beat Donald Trump,” the senator said.
When a shocked-looking Karl challenged him about it, Coons doubled his support for Biden. “Let me tell you, he had the best day of grassroots fundraising after the debate,” he said. “The first poll we saw after the debate showed Joe Biden gaining ground on Donald Trump. I understand there’s a lot of whining, concern and whining among commentators. That’s great. That’s to be expected, honestly.”
Citing the widespread perception that Biden’s performance in Thursday’s debate was disastrously poor, Karl pointed to examples of several commentators urging Biden to withdraw from the race. “I’m asking you, is President Biden even listening to what these people are writing?” Karl asked Coons.
Coons, a close ally of Biden from his home state, said no major figure within the party is calling for Biden to withdraw.
“There is not a single Democrat, not a single governor, not a single senator and of course not a single vice president who supports him,” Coons said.
