Incumbent Senator Bob Casey conceded to Republican challenger Dave McCormick in the US Senate race in Pennsylvania on Thursday.

In an email from his campaign, Casey, a Democrat, said he called McCormick to congratulate him on his victory in the race.

“Now that the initial counting of ballots has been completed, Pennsylvanians can move forward knowing their voices were heard, regardless of whether their vote was counted first or last,” the email said in part.

McCormick followed with a statement thanking Casey.

“Senator Bob Casey has dedicated his career to improving our Commonwealth. Dina and I would like to express our sincere gratitude to Senator Casey, Terese and their family for their decades of service, hard work and personal sacrifice,” he said in an email from his campaign.

A narrate for the race is currently underway because the unofficial vote count was within a 0.5% margin, triggering an automatic recount. The results of the recount are expected to be shared by the state on Wednesday.

This is the fourth time since 2004 that the state has conducted a recount of an election. None of these times did the recount change the outcome.

McCormick gave a victory speech earlier this month after the Associated Press predicted he would win the race. CBS News has not predicted a winner in the race. He filed a lawsuit his campaign filed against provisional ballots in Philadelphia, which are still being counted. The state Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that provisional ballots are a valid way to correct errors mail-in ballots showing errors such as no signature or no secrecy envelope.
