House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries denounced Thanksgiving Day threats against Democratic members of Congress, which ranged from “detailed threats involving a pipe bomb placed in mailboxes to swatting.”
Each of the threats was “signed ‘MAGA’ at the end of the message,” Jeffries said in a statement released by his office on Friday.
Nearly all House and Senate Democrats from Connecticut were targeted by bomb threats in their homes Thursday, including Sen. Chris Murphy and Reps. Jim Himes, Joe Courtney, John Larson, Jahana Hayes and Rosa DeLauro. Police found no evidence of devices in the lawmakers’ homes, Jeffries confirmed.
The threats against Democrats came a day after a series of bombings and “swatting” threats against President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet and administration nominees earlier this week. None of the threats proved credible.
“Threats of violence against elected officials are unacceptable, unconscionable and have no place in a civilized society,” Jeffries said in the statement. “All perpetrators of political violence against any party must be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
Jeffries also said Democrats had been “in close communication with the Sergeant at Arms Office and it is imperative that Congress provide maximum protection” for members and their families.
