“I’m sure he’s frustrated. He’s an athlete. This is something he’s probably been doing since he was 3 or 4 years old,” Grier said. “I think he’s in a good frame of mind. He’s handling his rehab and doing the work that he needs to do. It’s just not a situation or an injury that we can rush or put a timetable on. When his body tells him he’s ready to play, he’s going to play again.”

When asked if he would participate in the LTIR, Grier said it is not in the Sharks’ best interest to put the captain on the LTIR due to their salary cap space.

Couture told reporters there is no immediate plan to get him back on the ice. Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky stressed that Couture’s contributions as a sounding board for younger players are still useful despite his absence from the ice.

“He’s going to be a great sounding board while he’s not playing,” Warsofsky said. “For me and our staff. He’s been there. He’s been to the Stanley Cup Finals. He’s won a lot of hockey games. He’s a great captain. He’s still going to have an impact on our club.”

Shakir Mukhamadullin, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Yaroslav Askarov were all missing on day one of training camp. Coach Warsofsky said that each player’s injury is day-to-day.

“All those guys are day-to-day,” Warsofsky said. “We’re just going to take it day-to-day. They could come in tomorrow and feel great, and we’re going to put them on the ice. There’s a plan for all three of those guys.”
