BOSTON – A tow truck driver is recovering after being recovered stabbed several times Thursday evening in an apparent road rage incident. The suspect, 40-year-old John Burgo of Brockton, appeared in court in Brighton on Friday with a blue shirt covering his face.
Burgo is charged with attempted murder, accused of stabbing the tow truck driver in the chest and leg on Cambridge Street in Allston. Police arrested Burgo a short time later.
Before the towing incident
The police report indicates a possible motive, stating that the victim and suspect were having trouble following a towing incident on Tuesday and that Burgo returned on Thursday to confront the victim.
Javier Rivas owns Brighton Towing and says the victim had only been on the job for a few days and is expected to be fine. ‘The gentleman came out, opened the door and started [stabbing]so that happened,” Rivas said.
According to the police report, an MBTA bus driver told police he saw the suspect approach the driver’s side of the tow truck and begin arguing with the victim.
The suspect then allegedly punched the victim in the face, the witness told police. According to the police report, the victim got out of the tow truck and began physically fighting in the street when the incident occurred.
Incident captured on MBTA bus camera
Police reviewed surveillance footage of the MBTA bus that was directly behind the tow truck. Burgo was seen in the video with a knife in his hand, according to police.
Burgo pleaded not guilty in court on Friday to charges including assault to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
The judge ordered Burgo held without bail until a dangerousness hearing Wednesday.
