Broncos star CB Patrick Surtain II reportedly agrees to a $96 million extension, making him the highest-paid DB in NFL history

Denver Broncos star Patrick Surtain II is setting records before the NFL season even starts.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Surtain and the Broncos have agreed to a massive four-year, $96 million contract extension. At $24 million per year, he’ll be the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history. Surtain will also receive $77.5 million in guaranteed money.

Surtain, 24, has been a Bronco his entire career. Drafted ninth overall out of Alabama in 2021, he made the Pro Bowl the past two seasons and was a first-team All-Pro in 2022.

The previous record holder for highest-paid cornerback was Jaire Alexander of the Green Bay Packers, who makes $21 million in average annual value. As ESPN’s Adam Schefter noted, Surtain’s big salary resets the market at his position.

Other teams may have to worry about their defenses in the future, but not the Broncos, who open their season on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, as Surtain has years left on his contract.
