Brothers slain six days apart among this year’s unsolved killings in Indianapolis

They were brothers born a year and eight days a part. They died six days a part.

You never saw one without the other and even with mistakes made in life, according to their family, the boys matured into men, who were family oriented active fathers to their combined four little girls. Their daughters now have to grow up without their daddies.

Kason and Kallen Dixon were killed in separate shooting homicides less than a week a part.

Kason Dixon, 25, was shot and walked into Community Hospital East just before 1 a.m. and later died on Jan 13. Indianapolis police believe the shooting happened at East 21st Street and North Shadeland Avenue.

Kallen Dixon, 24, was shot Jan. 19 around 3:30 a.m. in the 1600 block of Sugar Grove Avenue at the Sleep Inn & Suites. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police were called there on a report of a stabbing and shooting. He later died after being taken to a hospital.

“My boys were so much more than how they died,” their mother Erika Williams told IndyStar. “I used to dress them like twins, and they hated it growing up, but would still dress similar when they go older.”

Kallen Dixon, 24, on the right and his brother Kason Dixon, 25, on the left, were both shot and killed days a part in January 2024.

Williams had four children all together and Kallen and Kason were the youngest. The family moved from Chicago to Indianapolis, and the children’s father left when the boys were 16 and 17. They were active in high school sports and Williams remembers having an active household full of kids.

“Anytime one of their friends was into it with their parents, Kason and Kallen would always ask if they could come stay with us,” Williams said. “My daughter has nine kids and Kason loved being an uncle more than anybody. He would always want to be around and both of them really loved their girls.”

Kason Dixon has a 6-year-old daughter and had just had a baby girl born Jan. 9 when he was shot and killed four days later. Williams said he had just left the hospital.

Kallen Dixon has a 4-year-old daughter and his girlfriend was pregnant with his second children when he was shot and killed. She never got a chance to tell him she was carrying his child.

“They weren’t bad people,” Williams said, “Just sometimes people make bad decisions and they pay for it.”

Kason and Kallen Dixon: Indianapolis killings in January 2024

Williams has had to get through their October birthdays this year, along with Thanksgiving and now Christmas. January will mark one year without them and she still doesn’t have answers.

She said she doesn’t feel like the detective for Kason Dixon’s case cares. According to Williams, his friends were with him when he was shot and they there interviewed by the department.

“They were worried about Kason and without a care in the world the detective goes ‘Oh, I don’t know how he is. He’s probably dead.’ No emotion at all. I’ve given them Kason’s phone and everything else I could think of, but I haven’t heard back.”

Williams got a hotel room after Kason Dixon died for fear of her family’s safety. She asked Kallen Dixon to come stay with her.

“I said you’re not going to leave are you? He said, ‘No mama, I’m right here,'” Williams said. “I was holding him cause he kept saying, ‘What am I going to do without Kason?’ We went to bed and I was woken up to a text message that said Kallen was gone. I looked over and he wasn’t there.”

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police found Kallen Dixon and a woman who they initially believed to be stabbed, but was shot in the arm and leg, in the parking lot.

“Now, Kallen, his detective works,” Williams said about Kallen’s case. “They know who did it, but there’s not enough evidence to convict them and they can’t be located.”
