Bryce Harper limps off the field with an apparent hamstring injury after a game-ending grounder

Losing a game is bad for the Philadelphia Phillies. Losing Bryce Harper for any length of time would be even worse.

The former MVP limped off the field Thursday with a hamstring injury sustained on a game-ending ground ball. Harper ran full speed toward first base but took an awkward final step and hung around in obvious discomfort.

The Phillies, who lost 7-4 to the last-place Miami Marlins, already had enough on their minds after left fielder Kyle Schwarber left the game with tight left groin.

Manager Rob Thomson had no update on Harper immediately after the game, saying the team would know more on Friday. He said Schwarber’s removal was mainly precautionary and that the injury occurred on an unbalanced throw from the outfield.

Schwarber added that he didn’t feel like the injury was “super serious,” but did say he would likely undergo imaging.

Both Harper and Schwarber are on track for another strong year, with Harper in particular standing out. Earlier Thursday, it was announced that he led all of the NL in the first round of All-Star voting, making him an automatic starter at first base. The Phillies can only hope he’ll be ready in time.
