Burn scars are likely to flood again from Wednesday

It’s a warmer start to the week, but the storms continue. Rain chances increase midweek, with fire scar flooding likely on Wednesday and Thursday.

Fewer storms developed Monday thanks to slightly drier air and a built-up area of high pressure directly over southern New Mexico, but the storms that did form still dropped heavy rain. Flash flood warnings were previously in effect for Albuquerque, Santa Fe and the Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon and Ruidoso burn areas. Thanks to the high pressure area, it was also warmer this afternoon. High temperatures will continue to increase across the state through Tuesday, when high temperatures will be even hotter. Scattered storms will develop again by afternoon, favoring parts of southern and southwestern New Mexico, but isolated storms will be possible across the rest of the state. Storms may cause locally heavy rainfall, which could lead to more flash flooding.

Another wave of monsoon moisture moves into New Mexico on Wednesday and Thursday as high pressure shifts eastward. This will bring more widespread and numerous showers and storms both days. These storms can also bring heavy rainfall. Burn scars are likely to flood Wednesday and Thursday.
