BYD targets Canada for market entry

China’s BYD is considering entering the Canadian auto market, according to a filing with the regulator earlier this month, a Reuters report said.

The potential move comes as Canadian officials consider imposing tariffs on vehicles imported from China, following the lead of the U.S. and European Union.

In June, Canada said it was considering tariffs on imports, in what analysts say is a way to align itself with its allies.

Documents filed on behalf of BYD with the federal and Ontario governments, requesting “advice on matters relating to BYD’s anticipated entry into the Canadian market for the sale of electric passenger vehicles.”

According to the Reuters report, it was not immediately clear when representatives from the company’s Canadian arm, BYD Canada, met with government officials.

“BYD targets Canadian market entry” was originally conceived and published by Just Auto, a brand of GlobalData.
