California sheriff’s deputy died in the line of duty from methamphetamine in a crash, authorities say

A 41-year-old Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy died of a methamphetamine overdose at a police station in April, authorities said.

Jonathan Stewart died April 27 from methamphetamine, according to a report from the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner. The report ruled his death an accident.

The medical examiner identified Stewart’s death scene as a sheriff’s station. NBC Los Angeles reported on Stewart’s death in late April, saying it happened while he was on duty at the South Los Angeles sheriff’s station.

A representative of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department could not immediately be reached Thursday for comment about how Stewart died, whether the department had any concerns before his death that he may have used drugs, and whether and how often the department asked its employees test for drugs.

Stewart’s death has left the sheriff’s department “deeply saddened,” according to an April 29 statement.

Stewart joined the department in 2006 and graduated from the academy the following year, the statement said.

“During his tenure, he was assigned to the Inmate Reception Center before being transferred to South Los Angeles Station in 2014,” the sheriff’s department said. “In 2020, he was promoted to Field Training Officer, a position he held until his passing. Jonathan dedicated himself to serving the South Los Angeles community for ten years. He was respected and highly regarded by his colleagues and superiors for his tireless efforts. Jonathan is survived by his wife and three children.”
