Callander removes two accessible spaces from the park

Two accessible parking spaces will be removed from the gravel parking lot on Callander’s Main Street – the parking lot near the splash pad in Centennial Park.

Callander Council made this decision because after the park’s main parking lot near the boat landing was paved, six accessible spots were created. These sites are close to the boat launch and connect to the concrete path that runs through the park.

The accessible spaces the city decided to remove “do not meet the design standards for compliance with the Accessibility Act for Ontarians with Disabilities,” city staff said in a report to council. The gravel surface can be a challenge for some.

Two accessible spots remain on Main Street. Both are located directly in front of the ramp that leads to the splash pad area of the park. With eight accessible spaces, staff felt that “this more than provides adequate accessible parking for this park.”
