Authorities investigating shooting in Camarillo

Late Saturday afternoon, gunfire was reported at an apartment complex in Camarillo, prompting police and police to respond with an armored vehicle and a helicopter.

A person with gunshot wounds later arrived at a local hospital, said Capt. James Sullivan of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office is contracted to provide police services in Camarillo.

At around 4:05 p.m., officers responded to reports of a fight at the Park Glenn Apartments in the 200 block of South Glenn Drive. A firearm was discharged during the altercation, callers reported.

Sheriff’s radio traffic indicated that authorities were eventually able to coax a 14-year-old boy and a dog from one of the units. Officers were searching for a reported shooting victim whose injuries may have been self-inflicted, possibly accidental, according to radio traffic.

Sullivan said investigators were still trying to determine how the gunshot wounds occurred as of 7 p.m.

Some apartments in the complex were searched for suspects and possible victims, Sullivan said. The response included detectives from the Major Crimes Bureau and personnel from the Camarillo Station’s Special Enforcement Unit. A sheriff’s helicopter assisted from above, and an armored vehicle was called in.

Around 6:45 p.m., as the search for those involved continued, a man arrived at St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital with gunshot wounds, Sullivan said. No information on the man’s condition was available, the captain said.

Authorities were still on the scene investigating until 7 p.m.

Officers found the man waving baseball bats in the air near bystanders outside a nearby restaurant. The suspect fled on foot and officers pursued him.

When police arrested the man, he allegedly swung the batons at the officers in a threatening manner, police said.

Officers shocked the man with a Taser and took him into custody without further incident, Cmdr. Sarah Heard said. While he was being treated at a hospital after the incident, he allegedly punched a Ventura police officer and spat on a deputy sheriff.

He was arrested on suspicion of robbery, resisting arrest and other offenses and was being held Saturday at the Todd Road Jail outside Santa Paula. Bail was set at $200,000, jail records show.
