Camden kicks off school year-opening festivities at primary school converted into temporary high school

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) — The Camden City School District is kicking off this year’s school year festivities on Thursday with giveaways and a farmers market.

It will take place at Eastside High’s temporary home, Alfred Cramer Elementary School, which will serve as a practice facility for students for the next five years while the new Eastside school is built.

The dust has settled and now workers are putting the finishing touches on the Eastside Tigers’ temporary home.

Superintendent Katrina McCombs says construction crews have been working against the clock to transform Cramer into a school that meets the needs of Eastside students.

The new swing space is equipped with vocational and technical education classes, also known as CTE. For one of those classes, employees converted a kindergarten classroom into a salon.

Each classroom comfortably accommodates more students and is air-conditioned.

Alfred Cramer Elementary School in Camden, New Jersey is the swing space where students from Eastside High School will stay while their new high school is built in the coming years.

“Unfortunately, the building infrastructure at the current Eastside High location could not support a certain voltage for air conditioning, electrically,” McCombs said.

Many of these improvements are the reason the district is getting started with help from the state the construction of a new $105 million Eastside High School.

“I can’t stress enough how valuable the learning environment is for our students because they are smart, open, warm and friendly. And for our new staff members, it’s important where they work,” McCombs said.

The new project is expected to be completed in 2029, but for now, Eastside High is where the students are. And there will definitely be a tiger paw nearby.

“Eastside Tigers, your temporary home is ready for you. Welcome, welcome, and let’s make it great,” McCombs said.

Camden City School students return to school on September 6. Thursday’s event runs from 11am to 1pm.
