Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau says there is ‘more work to do’ as his party loses long-held seat in Quebec

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party suffered another loss at the ballot box on Monday.

Louis-Philippe Sauvé won on the Bloc Québécois ticket to represent LaSalle-Émard-Verdun in Parliament against Trudeau’s personally backed candidate, Liberal Laura Palestini.

The race was close, with Sauvé taking 28 percent of the vote. The Bloc Québécois candidate defeated the Liberal candidate by fewer than 250 votes, according to Elections Canada results.

“Of course it would have been nice to win,” Trudeau said Tuesday at a news conference in Ottawa. “…But there’s more work to do.”

“The most important thing is that we make sure Canadians understand the choice they have in the next election,” Trudeau added.

Trudeau has been prime minister for nine years, meaning the Liberal Party has held power in the Canadian parliament for almost a decade.

In a recent Ipsos poll tracking the “best prime minister,” Canadians rated Trudeau at 26%. By comparison, the Conservative Party of Canada’s prime ministerial candidate, Pierre Poilievre, received a score of 45% in the same poll.

The Liberal Party has lost other by-elections over the summer. Toronto-St. Paul’s lost its status as a Liberal stronghold in June when the Conservatives won the seat by a hair.
