BOUNDARY WATER, Minn. – The body of one of two canoeists who went missing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness was recovered Friday during a search near Curtain Falls.

Jesse Haugen, 41, was in a canoe traveling over the falls May 18. Officials found his body Friday, but the search for the second missing canoeist continues. Travel Gram of the Lino Lakes.

Officials with the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office say two canoes went over the falls. Two people – one of whom was seriously injured – were rescued from the area, near the Canadian border.

Crews will continue to search through the weekend, the sheriff’s office says, although flights to and from the area will not be available until Monday. Weather and water conditions are playing a major role in the search efforts and more rain is expected in the coming days.

Between eight and 12 people are on the ground at a base camp, using boats, canoes, drones and K-9 teams to search the area.

Last week, Governor Tim Walz said announced that four crew members and a Minnesota National Guard helicopter would go to the Boundary Waters to assist in the search.
