A cantilevered home in Northern California’s wine country is “one of the most iconic residential complexes ever designed in Mendocino County,” according to Sotheby’s International Realty.
A marvel of architectural and engineering design, the beautiful residence on nearly 100 acres of land is for sale for $2.45 million. The house, called the Sky House, appears to float in the air.
Located at 241 Henry Station Road in Ukiah, the landmark property was owned by the late Max Schlienger. Schlienger, an accomplished engineer, invented a train system that was believed to rival the high-speed “hyperloop” transportation system championed by Elon Musk.
Schlienger built a life-size model for the train system on his property.
“The rail system was built on a lower flat area below the home,” listing agent Kevin McDonald of Sotheby’s International Realty – Wine Country, Sonoma Brokerage, said in an email. “The family is in the process of removing the system.”
McDonald isn’t “overly familiar” with the train system, but “I can speak to the unique features of the house and the land.”
It is unique.
The main three-bedroom, three-bathroom home spans 3,328 square feet. From the top of a hill, the residence offers beautiful views of the mountains, valleys and vineyards. A guest house and garage are connected to the Sky House via a hanging beezeway.
“As if floating in midair, the cantilevered Sky House residence is perfectly situated on the side of the hilltop, among a canopy of shade trees, surrounded by lushly manicured, Zen-inspired gardens,” according to the property listing.
The property is accessed via a long private valley driveway, which winds through areas of native grasslands and California Valley Oaks on the way to the hilltop residence.
“Each corner of the complex has its own captivating view,” according to the property advertisement. “Elevated and refined, The Sky House combines architectural ingenuity with a dynamic natural landscape to create an unparalleled offering.”
Other amenities include two fireplaces, a large patio, and a wine cellar grotto.
Ukiah is located about 140 miles northwest of Sacramento.
