Canton Township man shot dead after confrontation with neighbor

(CBS DETROIT) – A Canton Township man was killed Saturday after he was apparently shot during a confrontation with his neighbor, police said.

The man, who the Michigan GOP identified in a statement as 35-year-old Nathan Morris, was killed at 11:48 a.m. in the 200 block of Cornell Street.

“On Saturday, while he was walking with his family in the neighborhood, his daughter touched a neighbor’s mulch,” the Michigan GOP said in a statement from RNC National Committeewoman Hima Kolanagireddy. “The neighbor pulled out a gun and began threatening the family. Nathan sent his family home and said he would try to diffuse the situation, but instead he was shot and killed.”

Police arrived on the scene after receiving reports of a shooting following a brief confrontation between neighbors. When they arrived, they found the father lying in the street with a gunshot wound.

He was taken to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries.

After the shooting, the suspect barricaded himself in his home, police said, but eventually surrendered to police after they gave him several commands.

The suspect remains in custody pending an investigation by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.

“This was a senseless act of violence against the victim,” said Canton Police Chief Chad Baugh. “The Canton Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and to any neighbors who may have witnessed this tragic event.”

According to the Michigan GOP statement, Morris was secretary of the 6th Congressional District Republican Committee.

“Nathan Morris was a friend, a fellow patriot, a strong Christian, a great husband to Becky, and a wonderful father to Molly and Zoey,” Kolanagireddy said. “He was an engineer at Ford Motors and got involved in politics when Ford mandated COVID-19 vaccines. He ran for the Canton School Board to make schools safe for his daughters. I worked closely with him as a past chair of the MI-6th CDRC and as a member of the Wayne 6th CDRC, where he served as secretary.”
