Capri is facing a water emergency as it prepares to let tourists back

MILAN (Reuters) – Tourists who have booked a hotel on Capri will be allowed to return to the Italian island as the local government works to secure water supplies after damage to the aqueduct on the mainland deprived it of running water.

“We are preparing a less restrictive new decision to allow disadvantaged residents, people who own a second home, who often have their own water tank, and tourists with a hotel booking. It is the responsibility of the hotels to ensure they have water.” Capri Mayor Paolo Falco told Italian news program TGCOM24.

Earlier on Saturday, Falco had issued an order halting tourist arrivals after some pipes burst in the coastal town of Castellammare di Stabia, leaving Capri residents without water.

“We worked all night to… secure the incoming water transports and tankers of water. I apologize to everyone, but I couldn’t do anything… my priority had to be to prevent a health emergency ,” he added.

In May and June, Capri was the most popular Italian destination among foreign tourists, who accounted for 84% of total visitors to the country, according to a recent analysis by Lybra Tech, a company that provides tech solutions for hotels and duty-free shopping. data company Global Blue.

Tourists spend an average of four days on the island off the coast of Naples, nearly a third of whom are U.S. citizens.
