(CBS DETROIT) — The gift of giving is in full swing this Christmas at Capuchin Soup Kitchen on Meldrum Street in Detroit.

“As a native Detroiter, as you grow in life, it’s really important to return to where you came from in your community and plant seeds there to really come back in a meaningful way,” said Lauren J. Williams of Capuchin Soup. Kitchen.

Williams said she is so grateful to be a part of this holiday celebration and donation.

On Christmas Day, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen at the Meldrum location near Kercheval provided the community with a hot meal and special gift bags while a Christmas choir performed.

“And we give away gifts, so those gifts might include gloves, stuff to help you stay warm, which is a really cool opportunity. We are very grateful to our volunteers, staff and donors who make this all possible,” said Williams.

One of the donors is the New Mt. Harmon Missionary Baptist Church in Lincoln Park.

“It’s not about getting. It’s about giving,” Elisha Harrington said.

Harrington and other church members delivered bags of blankets to distribute after the community received a hot meal.

“Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ came to give, came to serve. We are here to serve,” Harrington said.

While this is a season for giving, Williams wants to remind the public that here at Capuchin Soup Kitchen, love is shared not just during the holidays, but every day.

We do this all year round; We have volunteers here every day, so if you come and volunteer with us now, you might do the same for the rest of the year. We would be grateful,” Williams said.
