Indiana State Police, at the request of the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, are investigating a police-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a Logansport man, according to a news release for the ISP Peru Post.
Preliminary investigation by Indiana State Police detectives revealed that earlier this morning, at approximately 12:23 a.m., Cass County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a residence in the 3000 block of W. County Road 500 S. – on the border of Cass and Carroll provinces – regarding a report of two people who had been stabbed.
Upon arrival, officers discovered one victim and began administering life-saving measures. While retrieving additional medical supplies from their patrol vehicle, an officer observed a man identified as Christopher S. Evans, 35, of Logansport, armed with knives. The deputy gave several commands to Evans, but he did not comply, leading to an altercation.
Evans attacked the deputy, who retreated into an adjacent field. The deputy then fired their weapon, striking Evans at least once.
Despite life-saving efforts, Evans succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. A notification has been made to Evans’ family. One victim remains in critical but stable condition, while the other victim’s injuries are not considered life-threatening.
No officers were injured in the incident. The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for the Cass County Sheriff’s Office following an officer-involved shooting, according to the release.
Indiana State Police are leading the investigation, with assistance from the Carroll County Coroner’s Office and the Carroll County Prosecutor’s Office.
This is an active investigation and no further information will be released at this time, the news release said. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be submitted to the Carroll County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office has not yet released a statement on the incident.
