Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is dealing with an ankle injury, making his availability for the Week 3 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers uncertain.

Herbert suffered the injury during the first quarter of the Chargers’ 26-3 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Despite the injury, head coach Jim Harbaugh said Wednesday that the quarterback is “feeling much better” and that he is optimistic he won’t miss any time.

“Crystal ball? Expect him to get better every day,” Harbaugh said. “I was in a meeting with him. Said he felt a lot better and good today.”

While it’s too early to speculate, Harbaugh did say Easton Stick would start if Herbert was unable to play.

“Right now it’s Easton,” Harbaugh said. “But we’re way over the legal line of ‘what if’ like this or like that.”

After injuring his right ankle, Herbert walked into the medical tent with the team’s athletic trainers but didn’t miss a beat. He was spotted limping after the game. Harbaugh said Monday that X-rays of Herbert’s right leg came back negative.

Herbert’s injury is the second to his right foot. He wore a running boot for two weeks during training camp after being diagnosed with plantar fascia, something the team will monitor throughout the season.
