Recovery efforts continue in the second week after Hurricane Helene devastated the Augusta area on September 27.
Although thousands are still without power this week, Georgia Power said that as of Saturday, October 5, 80% of its Augusta customers had their power restored.
The Category 4 storm made landfall along the coast of Florida’s Big Bend on September 26. The Augusta area saw isolated tornadoes and hurricane-force winds exceeding 80 miles per hour, downing trees and power lines.

Sunday 5:00 AM − A Time of Giving: United Way, GoFundMe raises money for Augusta
United Way of the Central Savannah River Area, the 211 Helpline and the crowdsourced charity site GoFundMe.org are jointly raising money for families affected by the damage caused by Hurricane Helene. The fund will offer unrestricted cash grants of $200 to help people pay for food, water, clothing, diapers and other essentials. “Additional grants will become available as new funds are raised through this impactful partnership,” said Madison Jones, a communications manager at GoFundMe. United Way CSRA’s 2-1-1 will help identify beneficiaries, and GoFundMe.org will provide the grants. GoFundMe has made an initial contribution of $50,000 to immediately help 250 people in Augusta. Tax-deductible donations will also be provided to support those in need.
