Olympic athletes from around the world have been showing off their official uniforms in the weeks leading up to the Summer Olympics in Paris — and they’re incredibly fashion-forward. Ahead of Friday’s Opening Ceremony, designers and brands responsible for creating the Olympic team’s uniforms continued to build excitement by sharing their collections on social media — and sports and fashion fans alike can’t seem to get enough.
During the Games, which end on August 11, athletes will enter the fashion capital of the world in meticulously crafted uniforms that represent and celebrate their home countries. While every country’s uniform is worth celebrating, there are a few that stand out from the rest.
Haitian-Italian designer Stella Jean, who designed the uniforms for Team Haiti this year, collaborated with Haitian painter Philippe Dodard to create vibrantly patterned garments that reflect the country’s cultural vibrancy and traditional Haitian customs like weaving.
Team Mongolia’s uniform, which was unveiled last week and designed by Ulaanbaatar-based couturier Michel & Amazonka, has taken social media by storm with its chic take on traditional Mongolian dress. According to the Mongolian National Olympic Committee, the outfits reportedly took 20 hours to create, and feature intricate embroidery, striking pleats and a sophisticated use of the country’s national colours.
Justin Chou, who heads the brand JUST IN XX, was chosen to design the Chinese Taipei team uniform. Featuring Taiwanese artisans Yen Yu-Ying, who practices banana fiber weaving, and Pei-Ying Lin, who makes flower pins, in the spotlight, Chou’s collection highlights traditional Taiwanese culture while still maintaining his signature avant-garde-meets-streetwear design attitude.
Team USA’s uniforms, outfitted by our longtime collaborator Ralph Lauren, effortlessly blend athletic silhouettes with classic cuts to create a quintessentially American collection. Lauren will dress the U.S. team for the ninth time during the opening and closing ceremonies.
