Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes not limited from practice after ankle injury, should start vs. Broncos

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes won’t be limited in practice this week after briefly going down with what appeared to be a potentially scary injury late Monday night in the win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Mahomes, who initially hurt his ankle in Week 8, re-aggravated the injury Monday during their 30-24 win over the Buccaneers at Arrowhead Stadium. Mahomes, while throwing a seven-yard touchdown pass to Samaje Perine early in the fourth quarter, suddenly stopped awkwardly and began jumping, clearly in great pain. He was also not touched by a defender during the play and had to be helped off the field.

However, Mahomes was checked out on the sideline and returned for their next drive without missing a play. He then put together a game-winning drive in overtime to push the Chiefs to the six-point victory and a perfect 8-0 record.

Now a few days removed from the injury, Mahomes said he is in a good spot heading into Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos. Head coach Andy Reid said Wednesday that they don’t need to retract Mahomes’ ankle “at all” and that he won’t be restricted in practice this week. So barring any setbacks or issues in the coming days, Mahomes should start.

“If you roll a little bit, it’s a little sore,” Mahomes said of his ankle on Wednesday, via ESPN’s Adam Teicher. “But I can get around and I’m looking forward to getting into practice and seeing how I can push it as the week goes on.”

Mahomes went 34 of 44 for 291 yards and threw three touchdowns in Monday’s win. He has thrown for 1,942 yards and 11 touchdowns with nine interceptions this season. The Chiefs, the only undefeated team left in the league, will host the Broncos on Sunday before traveling to New York to take on the Buffalo Bills next weekend.
