Child dies days after Burnsville shooting, injured father suspected

A boy has died four days after he was shot in a Burnsville apartment last week. His father is considered a suspect, but is still in hospital with his own injuries.

Burnsville police and firefighters were called to a shooting just before midnight Wednesday due to reports of an adult and a child shot at an apartment in the 13800 block of Echo Lake Drive, city communications director Carissa Larsen said.

Officers found the injured man and his son and transported them to HCMC in critical condition. The boy died Sunday from his injuries, Larsen said.

The case is still under investigation, but police suspect the man shot the child and also shot himself. Larsen said the incident appears to have been a “domestic family matter” and noted that investigators are still working to determine the full circumstances.

“We don’t know if the child was an intended target, and that’s part of what’s still being investigated,” Larsen said, adding that there were other people in the apartment.
