Children among dozens killed in Israeli attacks, Gaza officials say

At least 28 people, including children, have been killed in a wave of Israeli military attacks across the Gaza Strip, according to the Gaza Civil Protection Organization.

A school that houses displaced families was among the affected facilities, killing eight people last weekend, including four children, the agency said.

It comes as the UN makes a plea for Israel to halt its attacks near a hospital in northern Gaza.

The Israeli military claimed that a Hamas command center was located on the grounds of the Musa bin Nusair School in Gaza City, and has not commented on reports of attacks by the hospital.

“Hamas is systematically violating international law,” the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said on social media, adding that Israel’s response would be to “act with strength and determination against the terrorist organizations.”

Gaza Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Bassal told AFP news agency that the school had been repurposed as a shelter for Palestinians displaced by the war.

A displaced man who had been staying at the school, Abu, told BBC Arabic that the attack happened while he was sleeping.

“We were sleeping peacefully, but then we suddenly woke up to the sound of a very powerful explosion,” he said.

Another man, Mahmoud, said he was sleeping in a tent in the schoolyard when the attack happened.

“Stones and shrapnel flew, the walls of the school fell on our heads,” he told BBC Arabic.

On Sunday, Pope Francis condemned Israeli attacks on Gaza for the second day in a row.

He expressed his pain and thought of “such cruelty, shooting children with machine guns, bombing schools and hospitals.”

Kamal Adwan Hospital director Dr Hussam Abu Safiya said the generators had been hit and claimed the Israeli army targeted the fuel tank.

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, appealed to the IDF to stop attacks in the area surrounding the hospital.

Saturday evening’s reports of “bombing near Kamal Adwan Hospital and the order to evacuate the hospital are very worrying,” he said in a statement on social media.

“We call for an immediate ceasefire in the area around the hospital and to protect patients and healthcare workers.”

The hospital’s director also released a statement saying that the Israeli forces were treating the hospital “as if we were a military installation.”

“Anyone who leaves the hospital runs the risk of becoming a target,” said Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya.

He added that relocating the hospital’s operations would put patients at risk, and called for health staff to be “allowed to operate without the threat of evacuation.”

Israel has not commented on reports of an evacuation order.

The BBC has approached the IDF for comment.

Palestinian groups involved in the fighting told the BBC that a ceasefire agreement is “closer than ever.”

According to figures from the Hamas-run Ministry of Health in Gaza, more than 45,000 Palestinians have been killed during the fourteen-month war between Israel and Hamas.

The war began when Hamas-led gunmen carried out an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 others hostage.
