China had installed a total of 11.43 million electric vehicle (EV) charging points across the country by the end of September 2024, according to the latest data from the country’s National Energy Administration (NEA). This represents an increase of almost 50% compared to the same period last year, with a total of 2.84 million new charging points installed in the first nine months of 2024.
With just over 28 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) currently estimated to be in circulation in the country, consisting of mainly electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, there is almost one charging point for every 2.5 NEVs. NEA data shows that 66.67 billion kWh of energy was used in NEV charging in the first nine months of 2024, a year-on-year increase of more than 12%.
NEV sales in China are estimated to have increased 36% to 7.392 million units in the first nine months of the year, based on wholesale data collected by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).
