An hours-long cleanup of an unknown substance on the 210 Freeway backed up traffic in Pasadena for a long time Monday evening.
The work began around 3 p.m. on the westbound lanes of I-210 near Lake Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol, which issued a SigAlert due to the cleanup.
Although they expected the road to only be closed for about two hours, the closure lasted well past 7:30 p.m., with the two rightmost lanes still closed.
Officers have not yet revealed what the material is, but told KCAL News it was a “slippery substance” that caused the shutdown because it created an “imminent hazard.”
As of 8 p.m., they still did not know how long the Caltrans cleanup crew would remain on site.
