Cold weather starts the week in Kansas City. Which morning will be the coldest?

After a warm start to fall, there’s finally a chill in the air in Kansas City.

Overnight temperatures at Kansas City International Airport dropped into the upper 30s Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Afternoon temperatures on Monday are expected to reach just 61 degrees in the metro. Normally temperatures in Kansas City are around 68 degrees this time of year.

“Expect temperatures to continue to drop through mid-week, leading to some chilly mornings,” the weather service said.

Morning temperatures are expected to be in the 30s and 40s. The coldest morning is expected on Wednesday, when temperatures are likely to drop into the 20s and 30s.

As a result, a freeze watch is in effect for the Kansas City area from Tuesday through Wednesday morning.

“Frost and freezing conditions can kill crops and other sensitive vegetation and potentially damage unprotected outdoor pipes,” the weather service said.

The cooler weather may come as a shock to some. Daytime temperatures in the first half of October averaged around 81 degrees, about 10 degrees above normal.

Return to normal

After rising above 50 degrees on Tuesday, temperatures will gradually start to warm over the weekend.

Some areas in northeastern Missouri could still experience close to freezing temperatures Thursday morning, the weather service said.

Temperatures will be in the low 60s on Wednesday, low 60 degrees on Thursday and low 70 degrees on Friday. The sky will also be clear and sunny.

The drought is expected to worsen as it is likely to remain dry after the weekend. The last time Kansas City had measurable rainfall was September 24, when 0.17 inches of rain fell.
