It’s a local bakery that not only supports the blue cakes, but also feeds them.

Collegeville Italian Bakery is feeding working first responders from 20 different local departments this Thanksgiving – after serving 15 last year.

The bakery’s “Pizza with a Purpose” program will provide enough pies for all working associates in those departments so they can each have a few slices at home.

“It’s just to give back,” owner Steve Carcarey said. “The men and women there protect us while we are with our friends, while our families have a good meal.”

Last year staff of 15 different townships arrived at the bakery at staggered times to pick up enough pizza to feed everyone.

“They work 12-hour shifts, so they’re not with their families. So we give them a little breakfast pizza as a thank you, as a courtesy. Where would we be without them?” Carcarey added.

Each department has a separate collection time, spread throughout the day, with an interval of 15 minutes.
