(CBS DETROIT) – Detroit comedian Jay Cotton says he caused a bit of a stir on social media, but that wasn’t his intention.

In the video he found online, he said claims that 13 lions roam the city of Detroit. Cotton says the video has been viewed nearly half a million times since it was first posted, with many people thinking it was actually shot in the Motor City.

He says he thought it was pretty clear that the video was posted as a joke.

“It was just me being funny, y’all,” he said. “For example, I love the city of Detroit. This is my city. I love you all.”

Within days, social media users on various platforms started reacting to it in an unusual way.

“Not enough people are talking about what’s happening in Detroit right now,” said one user. “Please explain to me how thirteen lions walk the streets of Detroit,” said another user.

Now, the chef and comedian behind the post says he feels sorry for anyone he scared, but he hopes this is a reminder not to believe everything you see online.

“It was a joke in the end, but people don’t really use their brains. If the news doesn’t talk about it, you know it’s not true… look it up,” Katoen said.
