The condition of a retired Chicago police sergeant who was shot Monday morning in North Center is improving, said Ald. Matt Martin, 47th.
After being shot three times by two people near the intersection of Berteau and Lincoln avenues around 9 a.m., the former sergeant was in critical condition and taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, police said. On Tuesday, the 74-year-old man was receiving care in an intensive care unit, Martin said.
“At this point in the investigation, it appears the shooting was the result of a verbal altercation between the victim and the perpetrators,” Martin added. “CPD does not believe it was related to an attempted robbery or carjacking.” Police say the victim was shot as he got out of his car.
Police are pursuing charges in connection with one person, who was arrested Monday afternoon, Martin said.
In a statement Monday around 1 p.m., Martin said officers were searching for a second person inside a SWAT perimeter set up near the scene of the shooting. At 5:05 p.m., SWAT teams left the area, Martin said in another statement.
On Tuesday morning, Martin said there was no “publicly available information to share” yet about the second person.
Martin said responding officers gave the former sergeant life-saving aid — and that an off-duty officer who lives nearby and responded may have been the first officer on scene.
“We are all very grateful for their quick response,” Martin said.
