An 18-year-old man convicted of fatally shooting a man after confronting him outside a Delaware home will spend at least 27 years in prison.
A Delaware County jury convicted Rayshawn Anderson, 18, in October of murder and discharging a firearm into or near restricted areas for the March 8 shooting death of 37-year-old Alonzo Byrd.
Judge David Gormley on Monday sentenced Anderson to life in prison with no chance of parole for at least 27 years.
Around 4 p.m., Delaware State Police received a call about a person shot in the first block of Ross Street. Officers found Byrd with five gunshot wounds and rushed him to OhioHealth Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died.
Police arrested Anderson, who was 17 at the time, without incident in the area. Anderson was initially charged as a juvenile due to his age, but prosecutors sought to charge him as an adult for the shooting.
Prosecutors said Anderson confronted Byrd outside Byrd’s home before pulling out a gun and shooting Byrd in the middle of the road.
Byrd was born in Cleveland and moved to Delaware, where he worked as a cook at a nursing home, according to his obituary.
