Connor McDavid reaches another breathtaking milestone

EDMONTON — There’s The Great One, and then there’s the next great one.

The Edmonton Oilers have had both. First, Wayne Gretzky led the 1980s team to four Stanley Cups. Gretzky also collected a number of records, many of which still exist.

The next great, Connor McDavid, was no slouch. He removed some of Gretzky’s records while talking to countless others.

And he just touched another one.

McDavid is one of only three players to average one assist per game in their entire NHL career. Mario Lemieux and Gretzky are the only other players to do it.

That’s a great list to be a part of.

McDavid has recorded 674 assists in 672 games. Lemieux recorded 1,033 assists in 915 career games, while Gretzky recorded 1,963 assists in 1,487 games.

Earlier this year, the Oilers captain reached the impressive milestone of 1,000 career points. He’s been busy ever since; his career points total is now 1023.

He has 41 points from 27 games this season. He is currently on a five-game winning streak with five goals and eight assists. After a slow start, McDavid has certainly been heating up lately.

With 52 games remaining in the Oilers’ schedule this season, many more records could (and should) be broken before this year’s playoffs.

It will be interesting to see what the “Next Great One” does next.
