The construction work will cause overnight closures on both sides of the 605 Freeway for a week starting Monday, potentially creating a traffic nightmare for early morning commuters.
The closures, which began Monday evening, will last all morning every day through Saturday, December 7.
According to the California Department of Transportation, the planned construction includes concrete work, asphalt paving, k-rail installation, striping, guardrail work, sign removal and drainage work.
Closures are subject to change if weather conditions do not allow work to be completed. The full schedule is as follows:
- Monday, December 2 through Thursday, December 5: NB I-605 between Del Amo Bouelvard and I-105 between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM / SB I-605 from I-105 north of Katella Avenue between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM There will be a maximum of three lanes are closed at any time.
- Monday, December 2 through Friday, December 6: Both directions of I-605 between I-10 and Telegraph Road will be closed from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM. Up to four lanes will be closed, officials said.
“All associated entrances and exits will be closed sequentially as the work progresses. No two consecutive ramps will be closed at the same time,” according to a statement from Caltrans officials.
They urge people to use detours including I-710 or I-5. Officials have posted signs to guide drivers.
There will also be some lane and ramp closures for the planned closures, which will last through Saturday evening. These closures include (between 8:00 PM and 6:00 AM):
- I-605 northbound and southbound, up to two lanes are expected to be closed from I-10 to I-210,
- The eastbound I-10 connector to northbound I-605 is expected to be closed,
- Westbound I-10 connector to northbound and southbound I-605 closed,
- The Mount Olive Drive exit of eastbound I-210 is expected to be closed,
- The Mount Olive Drive exit of eastbound I-210 is expected to be closed,
- The northbound I-605 connector to westbound I-210 is expected to be closed,
- The Ramona Boulevard, Lower Azusa Road and Live Oak Avenue exits of northbound I-605 are expected to be closed,
- Ramona Boulevard, Lower Azusa Road, Arrow Highway and Huntington Drive ramps to northbound I-605 are expected to be closed.

The construction is part of the “Super 605” corridor project, which aims to restore the highway from Long Beach to the San Gabriel Valley, officials said.
“A total of $250 million in construction costs will be funded with $238 million from the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and more than $20.6 million from Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017,” according to a statement from Caltrans.
