Corbin City Council passes major medical cannabis zoning ordinances

Dec. 3—CORBIN — The Corbin City Council gathered for a special meeting last Tuesday to discuss a focused agenda that included updates on medical cannabis zoning, staffing changes and emergency management planning.

A major highlight of the session was the second reading and unanimous approval of Ordinance 2024-9, which assigns zoning classifications within Corbin to the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s medical cannabis licensing framework. This approval comes after the cannabis dispensary, No 1 Boundary LLC, was selected to operate in Corbin.

This ordinance determines where medical cannabis-related businesses, such as dispensaries and processing facilities, can operate within the city limits. Restrictions for the pharmacy take into account that the pharmacy may not operate within a radius of 300 meters from schools, daycare centers or places of worship. The zoning classifications ensure that these facilities comply with national regulations, while taking into account local land use policies.

The board also accepted the resignation of Christina Balla, effective December 4, signaling a change in leadership at The Corbin Arena. Although there was no discussion about her departure, her service to the city was gratefully recognized.

In addition to the ordinance and Balla’s resignation, the council approved the hiring of William Oliver as full-time coordinator. This decision aims to strengthen emergency services in the city, but the council stated that there is still a need for more emergency rooms.

Another important agenda item was the approval of the Whitley County Emergency Operations Plan, which Mayor Suzie Razmus signed. This plan aligns Corbin with national initiatives to prepare for emergencies.

Because this was a special meeting, no further matters were discussed other than the agenda items. The meeting was adjourned as councilors were optimistic about the progress made.
