If you need more $4.99 rotisserie chickens or 72-pound wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese in your life, it’s handy to live near a Costco. But what if you don’t have the convenience of a nearby warehouse? Luckily, Costco plans to open four new locations across the U.S. by the end of 2024.

Where are the new Costco locations?

As of August 2024, Costco had 884 locations worldwide, including 611 in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and another 108 in Canada. The warehouse giant plans to add the following new U.S. warehouses by the end of the year:

  • Bend, Oregon (October 2024)

  • Napa, California (October 2024)

  • Pleasanton, California (October 2024)

  • Madison, Alabama (November 2024)

In August 2024, Costco opened the following new locations in the US:

  • Covington, Louisiana

  • Ridgefield, Washington

  • Tomball, Texas

Costco has also recently opened or will soon open new warehouses in South Korea, Japan, Spain and Mexico.

What You Need to Know About Shopping at Costco

If you’re new to Costco, there are a few facts you should know before heading to your nearest Costco store:

  • You must pay for a membership. Costco raised the price of an annual membership to $65 for Gold Star and Business memberships and $130 for Executive memberships on September 1, 2024.

  • You should not count on being able to share your membership card. Costco is cracking down on sharing memberships by installing card scanners at each entrance. You can bring up to two guests, but only members can make purchases.

  • You cannot just pay with any credit card. Costco only accepts Visa credit cards, but you can also pay with most debit and PIN-enabled debit cards, cash, checks, or Costco Shop Cards (Costco’s version of a proprietary gift card).

  • Some purchases do not require a membership. You can use Costco without a membership if you are getting a prescription filled at the pharmacy, getting an eye exam, or buying liquor in different states. Most purchases require a membership, however.

Should You Join Costco ASAP?

If you’re still on the fence about becoming a Costco member, consider the following questions before you sign up for a membership:

  • Is the location close enough to actually go shopping? If you’re willing to drive an hour each way to shop at Costco, make sure the savings are enough to offset the time and transportation costs.

  • Do you save money when you buy in bulk? If you live alone or have limited storage space, it may not be worth buying in bulk from Costco or another department store chain.

  • Are you prone to impulse purchases? At your local Costco, you can buy everything from groceries to clothing, saunas, remote control toilets, and more. If you’re prone to impulse purchases, think twice about becoming a Costco member.

If you decide to join Costco, you can boost your savings with a credit card (but remember, only Visa credit cards are accepted). Check out our list of the best credit cards for Costco to earn cash back on Costco and Costco.com purchases.
