Cousins ​​jailed in Churchville shooting to face grand jury indictment

STAUNTON — Two men charged in a June shooting at a Churchville party that left two teenage girls injured formally presented their case to an Augusta County grand jury on Thursday.

Cousins ​​Isaiah J. Cassell, 22, of Mount Solon, and Matthew T. Cassell, 20, of West Augusta, face multiple felony charges.

A 19-year-old woman and a 17-year-old girl were injured in the June 22 shooting.

The sheriff’s office said the shooting happened at a party near the intersection of Buffalo Gap Highway and Churchville Avenue. When officers arrived, they found both victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

The sheriff’s office seized a .45-caliber handgun, along with three fired casings. Eight unfired rounds were also collected from two magazines.

Court documents show Isaiah Cassell is accused of opening fire from the passenger side of a Ford Mustang that sped away from the scene. An affidavit states that the Mount Solon man allegedly pulled a gun from a holster and began firing “in the direction of the crowd.”

The two suspects were arrested several hours after the shooting.

Isaiah Cassell is charged with aggravated assault, malicious wounding and two firearm possession charges.

Matthew Cassell is charged with being an accessory after the fact to aggravated assault, being an accessory after the fact to aggravated assault and two firearms charges.

Their attorneys canceled a scheduled preliminary hearing in Augusta County Superior Court on Thursday and filed a presumption of probability, automatically sending the cases to the grand jury.

Both men are being held without bail at the Middle River Regional Jail in Verona.
