Pleasanton Police report that they have noticed an increase in coyote activity in Pleasanton in recent months, resulting in several reports of deceased cats.

Police said the incidents usually occur in the evening and early morning hours. They said coyotes, like other predators in the area, pose a risk to pets, and urged pet owners to be vigilant by keeping their pets indoors at night.

“While there is always a risk when letting your cats outside, the risk is greater at night. Cats are more vulnerable to predator attacks or vehicle accidents at night,” Frankie Ayers, the department’s animal control officer, said on social media. “It is critical for us, as responsible pet owners, to protect our beloved companions and take proactive measures, such as keeping them inside at night.”

Leaving pets outside unattended can lead to damage from cars, other animals or toxins. Police said if your pet goes missing unexpectedly, contact local shelters, post flyers and immediately notify Pleasanton police.

“Wild animals, including coyotes, are our neighbors and it is important that we learn to coexist with them,” police said.
