BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Crews were still working Monday to recover a car that someone drove into the Minnesota River in the south metro early Sunday evening.

Shortly before 8 p.m., multiple agencies responded to a report of a vehicle driving into the river just east of the Interstate 35W bridge in Bloomington, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.

According to authorities, bystanders saw an occupied vehicle enter the water at the Lyndale Avenue Boat Launch before becoming completely submerged.

The search continued until 10:30 pm on Sunday and resumed on Monday.

Due to high water and strong currents, divers could not be deployed safely, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office water patrol unit was able to locate the car using sonar, but were unable to pull the vehicle from the water.
