Cricket World Cup means street closures on Long Island. This is how you prepare for the crowds this weekend.

EASTMEADOW, NY — The Cricket World Cup is on Long Island this weekend and authorities are doing everything they can to provide the largest security operation in Nassau County history.

Police have announced road closures and expected disruptions in and around Eisenhower Park starting Saturday.

Authorities also foresee challenges for fans traveling back and forth the stage after parking at Nassau Coliseum and Nassau County Community College.

Street closures in the area

“Eisenhower Park will be closed basically from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.,” Nassau County Police Chief Patrick Ryder said.

There will be partial street closures in the area for parts of:

  • Park Boulevard
  • Merricklaan
  • Charles Lindbergh Boulevard
  • Earle Ovington Blvd
  • James Doolittle Blvd

“I see inconveniences and delays for those traveling during these peak periods, so from 6:30 in the morning until the games start at 10:30,” said Nassau Parks Commissioner Darcy Belyea.

Authorities are urging people to plan ahead for the 12-day shutdown of training and competitions, which starts this weekend.

“If you’re parked illegally, you’re going to get towed. We’re trying to maintain respect for our neighbors in our communities,” Ryder said.

The LIRR and NICE buses are expanding service to accommodate

“All our customers have to do is take the LRR train to our station in Westbury and transfer to a NICE bus that will take them to and from the park.” LIRR Chairman Robert Free said.

Eisenhower Park features three 18-hole public golf courses. During the Cricket World Cup, one track will be open with a separate entrance and security.

“Are they going to tell me I can’t use my park after paying $16,000 a year in taxes? It’s going to be such a mess. It’s going to have such an impact on traffic and congestion,” said homeowner Richard Delorantis in East Meadow.

Local businesses are preparing for crowds

The stadium has 34,000 seats. Tickets are still available for a number of matches.

Businesses hope the huge cricket crowds will lead to more spending.

“Everyone in the area gets a little piece of the pie, I’m sure,” said restaurant owner Frank Borelli.

Borelli’s restaurant is one of several local businesses adjacent to Eisenhower Park that are planning cricket vouchers so you can park on their property and dine at a discount.
