Crowds flock to the Esplanade early to watch the 4th of July concert and fireworks

On July 4, people of all ages ran from the front of the line down the Esplanade to the Hatch Shell in Boston.

Jennifer Ravgiala of Lawrence said she went to Boston to take part in the annual festivities.

And when she said the word warm, she didn’t mean the warm temperatures during this summer vacation.

I love it. It’s a tradition and she gets to be a part of my tradition, and see all these handsome military men in their uniforms and see Lockhart shaking his ass,” Ravgiala said.

Reisa Volkert from Boxborough was first in line.

When asked how she got there, she didn’t give many details.

Yesterday morning…early, we can’t reveal all the secrets yet,” Volkert said.

She said she has been attending the event since 1976 and has made dozens of friends there.

“We have someone in our group who is a chef, he prepares a big meal and brings it around, we have someone who gets coffee and makes donuts, everyone has a job,” Volkert said.

Marcia Hoelting Kern and her children are part of that group. She said she came all the way from Texas to celebrate her 50th birthday and the 50th anniversary of the fireworks extravaganza.

“I’ve probably been working on this for 10 years,” Hoelting Kern said. “It’s fantastic, everything I hoped for. What a community here of sympathizers and everyone who is interested in the same thing.”

Keith Lockhart said this is his 29th year conducting America’s Orchestra and he is very happy to be back.

“My favorite part is the connection with the audience, seeing all these people from all over America and really all over the world,” Lockhart said.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
