Cubs, one of the most sought-after organizations by MLB players, originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
Recently, The Athletic conducted a player survey of MLB players, focusing on their favorite places to play, players to play with and other baseball happenings.
One question the poll asked players was, “Which team would you sign with if contracts, state taxes and rosters were no factor?”
A few players called the Cubs one of the most sought-after teams to play for this season.
The Cubs finished in sixth place on this question, receiving 6.9% of the vote. The Braves (12.7%) led the voting, followed by the Red Sox (9.3%), Dodgers (8.1%), Rangers (8.1%) and Yankees (6.9%).
There were no quotes from anonymous players about the Cubs. If you do the math, 6.9% of the 86 votes on the question equates to about six players. The players who did discuss the question mainly mentioned that the team they chose has a nice park or warm weather.
According to the report, player responses leaned toward residential preferences, “with many indicating they would like to play for the team closest to where they live during the offseason or where they grew up.”
Clearly, the teams at the top of the list have warmer climates or perennial success. So, when analyzing this list, it’s best to take it with a grain of salt, as player preferences vary from case to case.
