When the Chicago Cubs signed highly sought-after manager Craig Counsell, the thinking was that there might be joy in Wrigleyville in 2024. However, after a bit of a rough patch for the Cubbies, they now find themselves in a position where they have the third-worst record in the National League and could be in a position to be sellers at the trade deadline.
Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman talk about what’s gone wrong for the Cubs lately and how it’s put them in the mix for the third wild-card spot in the NL, but still 5.5 games behind. They also compare this season to the Cubs’ 2023 season, when they were on a roll and decided not to sell at the deadline. Have they learned their lesson or will they make the same mistake twice?
Later in this episode of the Baseball Bar-B-Cast, the guys are joined by Pittsburgh Pirates social media hit Saxboy to talk about how his enthusiasm for baseball and the Steel City has grown with the Pirates’ success. He discusses traveling and following the club closely, as well as a funny interaction with Pirates GM Ben Cherington at an airport.
Jake and Jordan also weigh in on the Mariners’ offensive struggles, who have benefited from excellent starting pitchers, the promising James Wood making his debut with the Washington Nationals, Aaron Civale being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers and a tribute to the late Orlando Cepeda.
