Cyclist killed in crash in Waikiki identified

May 24 – The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office has identified the latest traffic-related fatality on Oahu as Alan Margol, 66, of Honolulu.

On May 14, a 66-year-old man was bicycling on the bike path on Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki that police said had apparently been opened by a passenger.

Margol was reportedly riding eastbound on the bike path when he crashed into the rear passenger door. The driver of the car, a 65-year-old man, had stopped to let out a passenger, police said.

As a result of the collision, Margol suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, where his condition deteriorated. He died three days later.

Police said it was the 12th traffic fatality on Oahu.

The Hawaii Bicycling League expressed concern about the incident and said it highlights the need to continue the Complete Streets projects, which prioritize safety through infrastructure improvements that accommodate all road users and goals.

HBL Advocacy Director Eduardo Hernandez said it appears the car was occupying the bike lane and the driver carelessly stopped in a place not designated to drop off a passenger.

“Our cycling community shares its sincere condolences with the family and friends of the deceased gentleman and with those of all vulnerable road users who were killed,” Hernandez said in a statement. “While words cannot adequately convey the immeasurable loss their families are experiencing, we are united in our aloha to them and all victims of vehicular violence. We will work relentlessly to prevent future tragedies.”
